We have been making great progress without feeling we are pushing ourselves unduly. 11 or 12 hour days, but I guess now that we are a little more familiar with the ICW, the stress levels are less. Not gone, but less. Tonight we are at a free dock in Great Bridge, just south of Norfolk, Virginia. We passed through the Great Bridge Bridge (just had to say it) and will go through the Great Bridge lock tomorrow. There are free docks to tie up at on both sides of the Great Bridge Bridge, and it is a lovely facility. There are flowering trees and a bit of greenery by the docks, and lots of local people are taking time out to catch blue crabs at the dock edge.
You tie some raw meat, almost always a chicken neck or the like, to the end of a long string. Then you drop it in the water until it hits bottom. Before too long a crab will wander past your bait and is unable to resist. He will start eating it and that is your cue to slowly, slowly raise your line. The crab is so greedy he won't let go of his piece of chicken. In your other hand you have a pole with a fishing net at the end and if you do it just right you scoop your crab up with that before he knows what hit him. Between recreational crabbers and the zillions of crab pots we have to dodge on the water, I am surprised there is a crab left on the east coast!
We had a nice walk to lots of stores, and treated ourselves to some fast food. There are a whole range of restaurants and shops here, as well as gas stations and so on.
